Today we welcome Katie as she shares her adorable shared toddler room and nursery with us. She created the perfect theme for her toddler boy and baby girl to grow and bond in. Disclosure: this post may contain some affiliate links.
“When we found out we were expecting our second baby I decided to create a space that not only reflected my son’s personality but also celebrated this new life. We decided to have the two room share not only because of limited space in base housing, but also to help forge a strong bond between them.
I convinced myself that we were going to have another boy and since my son loves dogs a puppy theme seemed like a natural choice. When we found out that we were in fact having a girl I started to rethink the design. Ultimately I decided that little girls love dogs too and it was still a good theme, but decided to focus on the color palette—aqua and gray as the main focus, with navy blue accents for my son and lavender for my daughter.
I painted gray and white rugby stripes on the center wall to create a focal point for the room. The two adjoining walls I painted using Valspar “Simply Aqua.”
I found the adorable dog crib sheets at Land of Nod. Bonus: they also featured aqua accents that fit the room perfectly! I was able to pair them with a simple lavender polka dot crib skirt for my daughter, also from Land of Nod.
Coordinating crib quilts were difficult to find so I had to splurge on some from Pottery Barn Kids (avid Target shopper here!). I stalked the website for months and was lucky enough to grab them when they were 40% off.
To tie to bedding together with the rest of the room I made muslin throw blankets with fabric from Fabric.com. For my son I used the super fun arrow print on navy, for my daughter a fun polka dot with aqua, purple, and pink. I backed them both with the same solid aqua.
The crib was topped off this this amazing puppy mobile (another splurge!) from Pottery Barn Kids. I only feel a little guilty about paying full-price for this one.
I made this simple fabric bunting using quilting cotton from Joann fabric to add a little flair and tie together the navy and lavender.
The adorable Frenchie lamp was calling to me at Target.
The super cute pillow was purchased from online from Target.
The dog silhouettes were made using our two crazy pups. I simply took a picture of each of them, printed it out to the right size, traced onto large canvases and filled in with a black paint pen. A purple flower for our female dog, Molly, and a handmade navy bowtie for our male dog, Maverick, completed the canvas perfectly.
The dresser/changing table and matching end table were a really ugly yard sale find that I refinished before my son was born. I painted them white, stenciled on the gray accent, and framed the accents with trim from the hardware store. I’m glad I chose neutral colors so I could reuse them without making any changes.
The alphabet wall was actually a remnant from my son’s nursery. I had purchased an unfinished set and painted it to match his nursery. All I had to do was repaint them to match the new room.
I picked up the floating shelves at Target to hold little mementos such as their baby books (both from Etsy) and life verses (designed, printed, and framed by me).
The name plaques were made using unfinished wood plaques from the craft store.
I just love how everything turned out! My son loved watching and helping with the transformation. Each time a new “doggie!” appeared in his room he was eager to point it out and talked about it for days. I just hope my daughter loves it as much as he does!”
